Stressed? Lose the Stress, Lose the Weight

Are you one of those people who struggles with losing weight despite working out every single day? You've tried to eat healthy, exercise more, and have given up all your favorite snacks. However, you get depressed each time you weigh yourself on the scale as the weight continues to go up. What is wrong?

Here’s some information from Chloe Hung, author of www.happinesswithyoga.com blog, about this hidden factor which we have all heard of but tend to ignore. This hidden factor is what can make you fatter despite working out and eating healthy.

Cortisol is know as the “stress hormone” and it is likely causing you to become fatter despite your best efforts. Cortisol is a hormone your body releases when you’re stressed out or it thinks you are in danger. Did you know that doing vigorous and strenuous exercises can also increase your cortisol levels? This could be why you’re still unable to slim down after working out so hard!

Imagine this scenario. You wake up in the morning and have a huge argument with a family member. This makes you stressed out immediately after waking up. Then, you get stuck in traffic on the way to work which makes you late for an important meeting. Your stress level goes up again. After work you decide to hit the gym to exercise out your stress. You choose to attend a fast-paced and vigorous exercise class at the gym. Your body’s stress level goes up again because it thinks you are in a life-threatening situation when your heart rate is so high.

As you can see, your cortisol level, as a result of stress, can be way above the normal level at the end of one day. Imagine repeating this routine every single day. It’s no wonder why you’re becoming fatter instead of slimmer. Your cortisol is out of whack and you need to do something to bring your hormone levels back in check.

Here’s my advice. Continue to eat healthy & exercise, but if you are having a stressful day at work, choose a less strenuous exercise at the gym to help your body relax. Yoga would be a great workout for you to do after a stressful day. Yoga will help you relax which will reduce your cortisol levels so that your brain no longer thinks it is in a flight or fight mode. This may allow your body to burn off more fat since your stress hormones are now kept in check.
