Bad Breakfast Better

Most of us love to have waffles or pancakes for breakfast every now and again. Some, however, have one or the other almost daily. Because standard pancakes and waffles are considered simple carbohydrates, they are not a good way to start your day. You can improve them significantly, however, by making the following modifications:

1. Use whole grain flour - Whether you use whole wheat or a gluten-free option, using whole grain will improve the glycemic load of the food because it is higher in fiber.

2. Add chia seeds - To increase the fiber even more, add chia seed (preferably milled) ot the mix. Fiber helps improve digestion and blood sugar. Chia seeds also contain a variety of nutrients, including protein and omegas 3 and 6.

3. Add cinnamon and ginger - Cinnamon may help with blood sugar management and ginger is a great digestive aid.

4. Skip the fruit and syrup - Simple sugars impair carbohydrate digestion by destroying the ezyme needed to digest carbohydrates and, therefore, cause fermentaion in the gut, which leads to gas.

While there are healthier breakfast choices you could make altogether, at least the above four tips will help improve this famously sweet breakfast treat. Just be sure to treat them as a special "treat" versus daily dish.
